Every year, millions of models are created for various purposes. There are architecture models, prototype models, do-it-yourself models, HO models, and city models, to name just a few examples. But what do you need to create your dream model? Here are some tips for crafting your first model at home while considering your budget.

Crafting a Model at Home

Before you begin crafting a model at home or by hand, you should think about the tools and materials you will need throughout the process. You'll also need to establish the scale of your representation.

As a starting point, we recommend obtaining some sheets of paper or cardboard. If you're more advanced, you can also work with wood. We'll build the model layer by layer, stacking the cardboard sheets on top of each other, starting with the bottom layer. Draw the layers onto the sheets to cut them out. Use a craft knife and cutting mat to cut along the previously drawn lines. Finally, glue the vertically cut pieces together to create a 3D model.

This is the simplest method but requires additional steps like sanding and painting.

Advanced Models

Modeling can be done by anyone as long as you're willing to give it a try. Professional modeling might require more advanced skills in 3D modeling, handling printers, laser machines, or applying architectural details.

Some models involve multiple dimensions initially simulated virtually. Similarly, volume calculations can be performed using software, especially when it comes to prototype and architectural models.
